Obituary for John F. Murphy

John Francis Murphy passed peacefully in his sleep on August 1, 2018. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 66 years, Eleanor (McCarthy) Murphy. Mr. Murphy was born on June 10, 1918 to John and Emma (Paice) Murphy and was raised in South Boston, Massachusetts. He studied at John D. Bryant School of Mathematics and Science followed by Fitchburg State Teacher’s College. Mr. Murphy taught for a number of years in Arlington, Vermont. After their marriage in 1944, he received his Master’s degree as well as his Sixth Year Certificate at Holy Cross College and The University of Connecticut. He taught Mathematics as well as Land Surveying, and was the Vice Principal of Rockville High School for many years. Mr. Murphy just celebrated his 100th birthday with his entire family at the Mill on the River in South Windsor, where he resided at The Residence of South Windsor Farms. He is survived by his son Lawrence and his wife Veronica of Savannah, Georgia, daughter Nancy and her husband Richard Curry of Yorktown, Virginia, daughter Janet and her husband Daniel Kazienko of Hamden, Connecticut and daughter Catherine and her husband Michael Cummings of Milton, Massachusetts. He leaves his sister, Helen Murphy of North Scituate, Massachusetts and leaves a niece, Paula and her husband Brian Conlon of Woburn, Massachusetts. Mr. Murphy leaves nine grandchildren, Megan Curry and her husband Steven Smyser, Jennifer Curry and her husband Paul Szabo, Peter D. Kazienko and his wife Elena, Timothy J. Kazienko and his wife Jillian, Patrick M. Cummings and his wife Chelsea, Margaret Cummings and her husband Peter Stratigakis, John-Michael Cummings and his partner Cindy Jewett, Helen D'Elia and Francis D'Elia. He also leaves ten great grandchildren. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Bernard’s Church, 25 St. Bernard’s Terrace, Vernon, CT on Friday, August 3, 2018 at 10am followed by a private Burial. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Saint Jude Children’s Hospital would be appreciated. Arrangements have been entrusted to Burke-Fortin Funeral Home.
