Obituary for Joseph N. M. Chicoine

Joseph N. M. Chicoine
Joseph N. M. Chicoine died on Sunday, May 6, 2018, at Rockville General Hospital with family by his side. He was born on July 17, 1928 in New Bedford, MA to the late Hector and Yvonne (Claude) Chicoine. He was 89 years old. Joseph is the beloved widower of Ellen (Pfunder) Chicoine who passed away in January, 2018.
Joseph proudly served in the Merchant Marines on Liberty Ships during WWII. He then enlisted in the US Army during the Korean War. He maintained a Project Liberty Ship membership. He was also a member of the American Legion, Post 14 for over 60 years.
Joseph was a respected tool and die maker at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in Master Mechanic Department #34. He retired from Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in 1992 after 40 years of service. Dad had fond memories of his time at Pratt & Whitney and formed many lasting friendships. Joseph also worked at a number of part-time jobs including one at Gerber Scientific in Manchester, Ct. His years of military service and employment at Pratt & Whitney left him with many stories to tell and allowed us to learn and appreciate his sense of humor and knack for storytelling. Dad loved everything about the sea and took many deep sea fishing trips with friends and family. Most family vacations were spent camping on Cape Cod with long days on the beach. He especially liked to have the dogs with him at the beach and taught them to hunt for shells.
He was a skilled craftsman and took pride in completing and maintaining many home projects. His children were his built in work crew on many of the jobs. He loved his family and worked very hard to provide them a happy home life and instilled a strong work ethic legacy.
Joseph met Ellen in 1952 while she was in nursing school in Hartford Hospital and providing care for his mother. They married the following year and enjoyed 64 years together. They made their home on Spring Street in Rockville and raised a large family of seven girls and two boys.
He is survived by eight of his nine children: Norma J. Marchesani of Vernon, CT; Ann-Marie C. Regan of Kensington, MD; Claudette L. Mayer of Colorado Springs, CO; Paul J. Chicoine of Vernon, CT; Yvonne T. Chicoine of Portland, CT; Jacqueline P. Gregoire of Worcester, MA; Ruth A. Campbell of Lebanon, CT, and William G. Chicoine of Vero Beach, FL. He was predeceased by his daughter, Mary Ellen (Chicoine) Leab. He is also survived by his siblings: Yvette (Chicoine) Champagne, Vero Beach, FL;Wilfred Chicoine, East Hartford, CT and Raymond Chicoine, Coventry, CT., and by 18 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be from 5 – 8 p.m. on Sunday, May 13, 2018 at Burke-Fortin Funeral Home, 76 Prospect St. Rockville. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, May 14, 2018 at 10 a.m. Burial with full military honors will follow at St. Bernard’s Cemetery.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Fox Hill Center for their kind and compassionate care of Joseph Chicoine. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in his memory to: Project Liberty Ship,
