Janet Askeland, 75, of Vernon, passed away on Monday, April 9, 2018 after a prolonged illness. Janet was born in Brooklyn, NY on December 5, 1942 to the late Frank and Lorraine (DeMore) Wieland. She was married to Tore Askeland, Sr., of Bergen, Norway, who passed away April 11, 1992. They moved to Vernon in 1969 and raised their family. Janet is survived by son, Tore, Jr. and his wife, Joanne; Erik and his loyal dog, Larry; and Janet’s faithful canine companion, Heidi. She is also survived by a sister, Lorraine Bunde; brothers Frank and wife Judith Wieland; John and wife Jean Wieland, and numerous nieces and nephews. Janet was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Vernon. She was employed by Peoples United Bank as a customer service representative for 21 years. After retirement, she volunteered monthly at the church senior luncheon, Cornerstone Soup Kitchen and was a driver for CRT Meals-on-Wheels, based in Vernon for over 15 years. Relatives and friends are welcome to join the family from 10:30 – 11 AM on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Vernon, with a funeral service following at 11AM. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, Vernon.
