Obituary for Robert L. Savary

Robert Lee Savary (Bob, Rob, Robin) passed away on January 15, 2018. Born December 10, 1941 in Worcester, MA to Robert Weld Savary and Jane Lee Small, growing up in North Brookfield and Brookfield, MA. Sharing both of his parents’ names was an early testament to the joy he brought his parents, siblings, wife, children, grandchild, in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Bob is survived by his wife, Gabrielle (Coll) Savary and daughter Lauren of Tolland, CT; son Reed Savary, daughter-in-law Kathy and granddaughter Marissa of West Brookfield, MA; son Lee Savary and former wife Anne McCullough of Canterbury, NH; sister Susan Leland and brother-in-law Les of Martha’s Vineyard, MA; brother Richard and sister-in-law Holly of Acton, MA; brother Steven of Northbridge, MA; and many other in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and their partners from the Savary, Coll, Doherty family extensions. He was predeceased by both parents, brother James, and niece Jessica Doherty.

Bob graduated from UMASS Amherst in 1964 with a BA in Geology. Over the course of his career he worked at Mass Mutual, Aetna, retiring from The Hartford in 2002. He was blessed with lifetime friendships that were profoundly important to him, including Bob and Carol Lundgren, Steve Myers, and the HIG Tuesday night golf league.

He was devoted, loyal, and supportive to those he loved and could be counted on for a thoughtful discussion on any topic. Bob had a keen mind and was forever grateful to his father for instilling him with the confidence to figure out how to do anything, which served him well living in a circa 1856 home requiring constant maintenance; onto which Bob designed/built several additions. He was a gifted athlete and artist. Another passion was genealogy. Bob documented 40,000 decedents in his family tree going back as early as 4730 BC. Ahhhh, then there was his love of cars, golf, and travel.

Eternal thank you to the Hartford Hospital Conklin 5 and Vernon Manor staff for their attentive and loving care.

Calling hours will be at Tolland Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Merrow Road, Tolland from 5:00 – 8:00 PM on Friday Jan 26 with a time of remembrance at 8PM. Burial in South Cemetery on Cider Mill Road, Tolland at 10AM on Saturday Jan 27. Friends are asked to meet at the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fayette Masonic Lodge #69, or American Ancestors-both organizations that Bob was proud to be a member of or the American Cancer Society. For online condolences, please visit www.pietrasfuneralhome.com
